Birmingham City Councilor Johnathan F. Austin is Chair of the
Joint Public Safety and Technology Committee and is a member of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Committee.
Councilor Austin has effectively lobbied for enhancements that impact the overall wellbeing of the citizens of the City of Birmingham. His most noted legislative works include a Smoke Free Ordinance, an Anti-Texting while Driving Ordinance, a ban on Front Yard Parking Ordinance and licensing and regulation of pawnbrokers and secondhand dealers.
Dubbed a “forward-thinker”, Councilor Austin works to enhance the environment and make the city more technologically friendly.
As a founding member of the
National Technology Adoption Advisory Council (NTAAC) and current Co-chair, Councilor Austin is working to bring digital opportunity to every city and state in the nation. In Birmingham alone, he has secured more than $500,000 in federal funding to ensure public housing communities gain access to wireless internet.
The Birmingham native uses his technological training experience for both social and business entrepreneurship. Currently, he is President and Chief Executive Officer of Fitz, a technology consulting firm. He has served as Executive Director for The Center for Urban Missions and Chief Operating Officer of The New City Center. Both are community based organizations that address the needs of underprivileged children and adults.
As the proud owner of a rescue dog, Zeus, Councilor Austin holds the issue of being a responsible pet owner close to heart. He works to raise the awareness for the need of humane treatment for animals and the importance of spaying or neutering.
