Monday July 15 – Friday July 19 3:00 am – 9:00 am Architecture Camp for Rising Grades 6-12 2409 Second Avenue North, Birmingham, AL, 35203 Architecture Camp will explore the creative tenets of architecture through sketching, model making, and design. We will work through drawings techniques, look at architecture through history, as well as walk through our city to explore the built environment. The walkabout will take us from the Space One Eleven studio, along Rotary Trail, and by an architecture studio and built project. Students will then begin the process of designing a project of their own, leveraging and refining the skills they are learning through drawing and model-making. Monday July 15 – Friday July 19 3:00 am – 9:00 am Architecture Camp for Rising Grades 6-12 2409 Second Avenue North, Birmingham, AL, 35203 Architecture Camp will explore the creative tenets of architecture through sketching, model making, and design. We will work through drawings techniques, look at architecture through history, as well as walk through our city to explore the built environment. The walkabout will take us from the Space One Eleven studio, along Rotary Trail, and by an architecture studio and built project. Students will then begin the process of designing a project of their own, leveraging and refining the skills they are learning through drawing and model-making. The camp with be taught by Birmingham architects Kris Nikolich and Andrew C. Bryant of Design Initiative.

We will work through drawings techniques, look at architecture through history, as well as walk through our city to explore the built environment. The walkabout will take us from the Space One Eleven studio, along Rotary Trail, and by an architecture studio and built project. Students will then begin the process of designing a project of their own, leveraging and refining the skills they are learning through drawing and model-making. Experience the process of putting those factors to work. Let yourself be creative. We will examine the necessary elements of abstract landscape design and translate that to a beautiful painting. We will create striking images of real or imagined places. David will demonstrate his process and guide you as you create artwork with renewed vision. Join Madison Faile for his new Abstract Acrylic class. Explore how to intentionally use colors and values, how to create emotion-evoking compositions and more. Madison will demonstrate his painting style and offer one on one guidance. 6:00 pm – 6:00 pm In Celebration: Brad Watson's THERE IS HAPPINESS 5502B Crestwood Blvd, Birmingham, AL, 35212 Join us along with a panel of writers, colleagues, and friends of the late Mississippi writer Brad Watson as we celebrate the posthumous publication of There Is Happiness: New and Selected Stories, with brief readings and a discussion on Watson’s life and work. As always, this event is free, and all are welcome, but please RSVP here. Brad Watson (1955–2020) was the National Book Award–shortlisted author of Last Days of the Dog Men, The Heaven of Mercury, Aliens in the Prime of Their Lives, and Miss Jane. Originally from Mississippi, at the time of his death he was a professor of literature and creative writing at the University of Wyoming. Alyson Hagy worked alongside Brad Watson at the University of Wyoming. She is the author of eight works of fiction, including the novel Scribe and the story collection Ghosts of Wyoming. The recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Wyoming Institute of Humanities Research, and the Christopher Isherwood Foundation, her fiction has been awarded a Pushcart Prize, a Nelson Algren Award, and has appeared in Best American Short Stories. She is a Professor of English at the University of Wyoming. Caleb Johnson was one of Brad Watson’s graduate students at the University of Wyoming. He is the author of the novel Treeborne (Picador), which received an honorable mention for the Southern Book Prize. His nonfiction has been cited in Best American Essays, and appears in Garden & Gun, Southern Living, The Wall Street Journal, and other publications. Currently, Caleb teaches creative writing at the University of South Alabama. Don Noble, PhD Chapel Hill, Prof of English, Emeritus, taught Brad Watson at The University of Alabama. He has been the host of the APTV literary interview show Bookmark since 1988 and has broadcast a weekly book review for APR since November of 2001, so far about 850 reviews. Noble is the editor of four anthologies of Alabama fiction and the winner of the Alabama state prizes for literary scholarship, service to the humanities and the Governor’s Arts Award.

Illustration Camp for Rising Grades 6-12
Monday July 22 – Friday July 26 3:00 am – 9:00 am Illustration Camp for Rising Grades 6-12 2409 Second Avenue North, Birmingham, AL, 35203 Follow in the tradition of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein and learn illustration. Students will work with concepts that will improve the way they communicate visually. They will also experiment with a variety of drawing media while learning valuable technical skills. This camp will be taught by Darius Hill. Hill is the Chair of the Visual Arts Department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. He holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Alabama and a BFA in Printmaking from the Atlanta College of Art.

Being part of our summer day camp program goes beyond silly songs and games. This camp will be taught by Darius Hill. Hill is the Chair of the Visual Arts Department at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. He holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Alabama and a BFA in Printmaking from the Atlanta College of Art.

All staff are thoroughly screened and background checked and receive training in first aid, CPR, safety and child abuse prevention, character building, and program implementation. You can depend on the Y to ensure camp is well supervised. Summer Camp seems far off, but it will be here before you know it. We hope you and your family will join us and help make it their best summer ever. Our camp day is built on an open programming model where campers will experience daily opportunities to select which games, crafts, or activities they participate in. Not only will they get to follow their own interests, but they’ll make their own path throughout the summer. There will be organized events and large group games outside the regular open programming periods. Each week, different fun opportunities will come to our camps. Being part of our summer day camp program goes beyond silly songs and games. Camp is about learning who you are, becoming what you want to be, developing new skills and healthy habits, reaching goals, and building relationships. Our summer day camp helps kids gain self-confidence, build character, and focus on the whole child in spirit, mind, and body.

There will be organized events and large group games outside the regular open programming periods. Each week, different fun opportunities will come to our camps. Being part of our summer day camp program goes beyond silly songs and games. Camp is about learning who you are, becoming what you want to be, developing new skills and healthy habits, reaching goals, and building relationships. Our summer day camp helps kids gain self-confidence, build character, and focus on the whole child in spirit, mind, and body.

Great care goes into creating a fun and safe environment. We work hard to hire staff of the highest integrity and personal and spiritual maturity, and are enthusiastic about camp. All staff are thoroughly screened and background checked and receive training in first aid, CPR, safety and child abuse prevention, character building, and program implementation. You can depend on the Y to ensure camp is well supervised. Summer Camp seems far off, but it will be here before you know it. We hope you and your family will join us and help make it their best summer ever. Our camp day is built on an open programming model where campers will experience daily opportunities to select which games, crafts, or activities they participate in. Not only will they get to follow their own interests, but they’ll make their own path throughout the summer. There will be organized events and large group games outside the regular open programming periods. Each week, different fun opportunities will come to our camps. Being part of our summer day camp program goes beyond silly songs and games. Camp is about learning who you are, becoming what you want to be, developing new skills and healthy habits, reaching goals, and building relationships. Our summer day camp helps kids gain self-confidence, build character, and focus on the whole child in spirit, mind, and body.
